Inkle Loom Weaving – Apr 26, 2025

$85.00

Inkle weaving is an ancient and portable form of weaving, traditionally used by nomadic peoples to create strong, patterned bands for belts, laces, bookmarks, guitar straps, leashes, and more. These woven bands can be used as ties, straps, headbands, and decorative edges for garments or other textile goods. The term “inkle” means “ribbon” or “tape” and refers to any warp-faced woven good made on any type of loom.

Description

In this class, participants will learn the foundational skills of inkle weaving and we will guide you through the essential techniques of creating beautiful and functional woven bands. We will cover the following topics:

Exploring Fiber Options: Compare and contrast bands woven in various fibers and patterns. Discover the versatility of inkle weaving and see examples of small items made from bands.

Weaving Warp-Faced Bands: Understand the basics of weaving to create warp-faced bands, where the warp threads dominate and create the pattern.

Patterns: Explore how to read and design simple patterns by understanding the basic elements of complex designs. Create your unique band by experimenting with different patterns and colors.

Warping the Loom: Learn how to wind the warp onto the loom, manage tension, and fix mistakes that may occur during the warping process.

Starting and Ending Projects: Learn the best practices for starting and ending your weaving projects, including how to finish off your bands neatly and securely.

By the end of the class, you will have woven your own one-of-a-kind inkle band, perfect for practical use or as a decorative element in your textile projects. Once you master the basics, the possibilities with inkle weaving are endless.

Students should bring:

We will have a selection of threads available to choose from. If you want to bring your own, please bring 3 contrasting color crochet threads in size 3 or 5 for the best experience.
