Description
Fan carving is a type of wood carving from the end grain of the wood. This is done by riving or slicing on the end grain to create the feathers or blades. A gouge cut into the feathers or blades as an interlock and a hinge to give the appearance of a 3d design carving.
In this class you will be able to craft two fan birds. You will learn the intricate process of laying out the interlock and hinge, delicately riving feathers, and skillfully carving the bird’s profile. Witness the true magic as you fan the wings and tail, creating a stunning three-dimensional effect that defies the confines of a single piece of wood.
Discover the art of preparing your own blanks, ensuring you’re equipped to continue your fan carving journey beyond the class.
Please be aware that this hands-on experience may require a level of hand strength and dexterity to fully engage in the crafting process.
